Sudirman bin Haji Arshad was born on 25 May 1954 in Temerloh, Pahang. He is the son of a married couple, Haji Arshad bin Haji Hassan and Hajah Ramlah binti Dahlan. His father got inspired to named him as Sudirman as named after General Soedirman because he want his son to be a great warrior. He also warmly greeted as ‘Diman’ by his family members.  His father was a manager of the Syarikat Bas Temerloh (Temerloh Bus Company), while his mother was an active politician and involved in the independence movement for Malaya. His mother died at a very young age, 33 in 1959 five years after Sudirman was born due to an illness. His father re-married with Mariam binti Mohamad after his wife died. Haji Arshad and his new wife was given two child that are Baharom and Maslina. In 1978, Haji Arshad was died and before he died, he got the chance to see his childrens growing success.​​

Sudirman attented his primary education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Tanjung Lalang, Temerloh and continued his higher secondary education at Sekolah Menengah Sultan Abu Bakar (SABS) in Kuantan. He got scholarship to further his study oversea in medical field but he did not accept it. Then he went on to do his tertiary education at University of Malaya for his law degree, and graduated with a Bachelor in Law (LL.B) in 1980. In 1983,  he went for legal training and is recognized as a lawyer in 1984. However, he left the legal field and tend to choose the art field as his career.

Sudirman is also a patriotic person. There is an album of Sudirman, ‘Abadi’ which all the songs in the album was a patriotic songs. The songs that available in the album are “Warisan”, “Kehadiranku”, “31 Ogos” and “Tegakkan Bendera Kita”. However, the album did not get much response from peoples unlike his others commercial albums. But, no one expect that those patriotic album receive much attention until now. His song is often plays every years during the celebration of National Day.
